Aprilia in Dakar 2008

After a long time of absolutely no interesting news in the world of Aprilia there is finally big news worth mentioning. Aprilia is competing in the Dakar 2008 rally! This time its Dutch enduro driver Henk Knuiman who's riding the Aprilia RXV450. Last year Patrick van Lee had a great result finishing the rally in 75th place overall on his Aprilia RXV450.

Henk Knuiman is working with Aprilia Holland and Aprilia dealer Startwin that build the bike. Closely followed by the Factory in Noale. Startwin will also give technical support during the rally traveling along with the team's own service truck.

The team build totally rebuild the RXV 450. Here's a list of changes on the bike:

-3 fuel tanks holding 35 liter (2 on the front and one under the seat)
-Completely new Dakar fairings with a Pegaso headlight(looks great)
-Marzocchi Shiver forks
-Sachs rear shock build by the Aprilia Offroad team.
-Totally new exhaust build by Startwin and Bos Exhausts
-Special dashboard and roadbook
-Alpina rims
-Special Twin Air airfilter
-08 RXV 450 engine build by the factory Aprilia Offroad team

Henk Knuiman is no stranger to the Dakar rally. He finished the rally 4 times always in the top 20. Best result was last years 11th place. As part of the preparation Knuiman entered in the Shamrock 2007 rally which he finished in 2nd place.

Aprilia News will be following the rally closely and will give updates every day during the rally about the progress of Henk Knuiman.

Aprilia MXV450 news

The november issue of the free Motocrossdigital magazine ( download it at http://www.motocrossdigital.com ) has a feature about this seasons factory mx bikes including the Aprilia MXV. Very interesting read and I advise you to download the magazine and read it for yourself. Some interesting news. The bike has 10% more power than its japanese counterparts,it currently has a honda swingwarm,it weighs 108kg's. The new big bang configuration seems to be very succesful. The reporter found Chiodi's bike the most powerful bike he has ever ridden but it's too heavy in the front. The report says that the production bike will be there at the end 2008/beginning 2009. For 2008 their will be a lot of changes including changes to the engine block, frame and reducing of overall weight. Also the old style swingarm is coming back. In short a complete overhaul of the MXV.

Also Aprilia has been working on a 250 MX bike for a year now. No details about that one yet. But it's real.

Carlson wins AMA Supermoto Unlimited championship

Morongo casino (California, USA) was the venue for the final 2 rounds of the AMA Supermoto Championship. Benny Carlson rode to a conservative 5th place in Saturdays final, clinching his 2nd AMA Supermoto Unlimited Championship and his 1st for the team.
Due to Atkins’ broken left arm, flat track expert Henry Wiles and French Supermoto pro Kevin Bethome were brought as replacement riders to earn points for the teams’ championship. Henry Wiles rode to an amazing 6th place in Saturdays final, and Kevin Bethome did the same putting the team on the box in 4th place beside Ben Carlson in 2nd during Sunday’s final event. This gave the team enough points to win the team championship over factory KTM by 1 point.

2007 AMA Supermoto Unlimited Team Champion – Factory Aprilia Rip It Energy Fuel

2007 AMA Supermoto Unlimited – 6th place Darryl Atkins (had runner up position prior to injury and not competing in final 3 rounds)

“It was an almost perfect season for the team, apart from my little mishap. We are really happy that Benny won the riders championship, and that we were able to choose the right guys (Kevin Bethome and Henry Wiles) to capture the points needed to win the teams championship along side Benny.
All this would not have been possible without everyone’s support, and we are really grateful for their efforts. I have to especially thank Aprilia USA, Rip It Energy Fuel, Parts Unlimited, and Bel Ray Oils. Amauri Nunes, Todd and Georgiann Carlson, John Weiss and Robert Pandya all played a key part in the teams success this season.”

Leovince's for the Shiver

EVO II homologated cans now available in Factory and GP-style for the new Noale naked version. A winning Italian duo LeoVince and Aprilia, characterized by high-tech features and a winning personality: the protagonists being the homologated SBK Factory and GP-style cans named EVO II and the new Aprilia SL Shiver 750.

The LeoVince SBK Factory cans, EVO II type-approved, feature a winning blend of impeccable cost-effective performance levels, and high-tech content. They can be fitted to the original system by means of special stainless steel manifolds. The silencer is completely constructed of titanium with a choice of either titanium or carbon fibre outer skin. The rear sump and the frame fixture strips are also made of carbon fibre.

The GP-style Evo II type-approved cans offer the same performance levels but they are characterized by launcher-shaped (“a tromboncino”) styling, directly inspired by the current MotoGP style (in which LeoVince has always been present in the capacity of technical sponsor) giving a modern racing look. The silencer and the manifold connection pipe are made of TIG-welded stainless steel with a sandblasted finish. Frame fixture is by means of a carbon fibre bracket.

08 SXV van den Bosch Replica

The new 08 van den Bosch replica. Not many changes except for the new colors and the lightened frame (check the holes under the numberboard). Details when available

08 Tuono's

Minor changes for the 08 Tuono models. The factory now has gold wheels and red decals on the front fairing instead of a white decal.

And also all the 2008 Tuono R's have black wheels now. Guess Aprilia has stepped of the blue wheels for 2008.

08 RSV Colors

I present the new colors of the RSVR base model for 2008. 2 completely new colors white and blue. Looks amazing I must say! All the new 08 RSVR's have black wheels now. The factory models are distinguised by the gold frames and golden wheels. Sadly the 08 Factory's look exactly the same as the 07's no changes there. To bad since I think Aprilia should stop their golden frame frenzy.

FV2 1200 concept

2007 was the twentieth anniversary of Aprilia’s first GP win and a year in which another four world championships were won. This extraordinary achievement is a repeat of Aprilia’s 2006 success story and takes the total of Aprilia’s world championship titles to an amazing 31. What better technical and sporting heritage could there be behind the Aprilia FV2 1200 concept bike? The FV2 1200 embodies the latest Aprilia technology and reveals the direction likely to be taken by technical and stylistic development at Aprilia in the near future.

The heart of the FV2 1200 is Aprilia’s mighty, 1200 cc, 90° V twin, a power plant that confirms Aprilia’s determination to develop high capacity, high technology engines using in-house skills and competence.

The minimalist bodywork of the FV2 1200 creates a stunning preponderance of volume towards the front of the bike. The result is a revolutionary, courageous and futuristic look that is destined to form the solid basis for the evolution of Aprilia motorcycle styling.

The engine also fulfils a structural role, and acts as the starting point for the backbone of the motorcycle, a carbon fibre, load bearing frame with integrated filter box. The seat is supported by an aluminium beam and by two carbon fibre struts that extend into the tail and around the rear light cluster. The parallelogram front suspension is based on the system already tried and tested on Aprilia’s 250 cc GP racers.

These futuristic solutions have led to an amazing weight reduction (the FV2 1200 weighs under 160 kg) and an extremely compact size. The extraordinary agility that has always typified Aprilia motorcycles therefore finds its utmost expression in the FV2 1200.

The 1200 cc V twin engine is liquid cooled and boast a ride-by-wire control system. Traction control, a latest generation ABS system and electronic suspension management are also provided to let you ride at your performance peak while maintaining complete control over the bike.

The Aprilia FV2 1200’s dashboard incorporates a multi-functional instrument cluster that can be interfaced not only with the bike’s own CAN line but with a PC too, making it possible to download telemetric data for personal performance evaluations, reconfigure the information shown on the matrix display, load new mappings from the internet, display itineraries, and integrate GPRS and GSM modules for mobile phone connectivity.

V4 spotted

The new V4 spotted at Valencia...first time without the RSV Factory fairings.

Lorenzo 250cc Champion

Jorge Lorenzo wrapped up his second consecutive 250cc title, one round early, by finishing third in a thrilling Malaysian Grand Prix - won by Hiroshi Aoyama.

Lorenzo needed to score just five points in Malaysia, even if nearest rival Andrea Dovizioso won the race, but the Fortuna Aprilia star wanted much more and took the lead from Dovi at the halfway mark.

The Italian responded and remained in Lorenzo's slipstream, and the pair were then caught by KTM team-mates Hiroshi Aoyama and Mika Kallio - with Hector Barbera also in tow!

The top five exchanged blows until the penultimate lap, when class rookie Kallio launched an over-optimistic out braking move into the final hairpin - and took out race leader Dovizioso. That allowed Aoyama to inherit a lead he held to the finish, while Barbera took second place ahead of countryman Lorenzo. Aspar Aprilia riders Alvaro Bautista and Alex de Angelis both failed to finish.

Lorenzo celebrated his final 250cc title by changing into a gold-coloured boxer's dressing gown and gloves before a tearful Jorge 'danced' his way into parc ferme to collect a mock championship belt!

125cc

Having seen team-mate and title rival Hector Faubel close to within one point, Gabor Talmacsi will now head to the 125cc season finale with a ten point lead after a dominant victory at Sepang.

Talmacsi was quickly up front and pulling away hand-over-fist from the opposition, while pole sitter Faubel was left to try and limit the damage within a hectic eight-rider fight for second position.

The Hungarian Aspar Aprilia rider went on to win by 6.753secs after backing off in the closing stages, while team-mate Faubel was fourth with two laps to go. The Spaniard managed to overhaul Joan Olive on the final lap, but KTM's Tommy Koyama remained out of reach.

Chiodi takes first victory with the Aprilia MXV

The Aprilia MXV 4.5 entered into the motocross history books thanks to Chicco Chiodi's success in the final round of the Italian Motocross Championships, disputed on Sunday, October 14th at Gazzane di Preseglie (Brescia, Italy). In fact, it was the first time that a twin 4-time motorcycle won an official national motocross championships race. Riding the MXV 4.5 to success was Chicco Chiodi, the three-time international 125 champion and official rider of the Noale Production House.

At the start of Race 1, Chiodi didn't have a great start, taking the first curve in the middle group. In a couple of laps, he was able to rid himself of the adversaries he had been following and made his way up to 2nd place, aiming for Philippaerts in the lead. This last adversary, however, was able to successfully keep the lead and went on to win the heat. For Chiodi, also the winner of the fastest lap during the race, it was a well-deserved 2nd place, especially knowing that victory was within reach.

This undertaking was simply pushed back to the second heat when Chiodi, second at the start behind Philippaerts, passed his rival during the first lap and gained the lead. Both riders immediately stepped up the rythm of the race (Salvini, who finished 3rd, was about 30 seconds behind the top two finishers) but Chiodi was able to contain Philippaerts' attacks, ultimately forcing his rival to settle for 2nd. The checkered flag thus awarded the heat victory (and that of the day) to Chicco Chiodi's Aprilia twin.
Thus the year of Aprilia's official reentry into the motocross world closes out with a brilliant, national affirmation of the evident progress made by the MXV 4.5.
